Why is Ontario choosing the Highest Cost Peak Power Option?

The Independent Electricity System Operator (IESO) has given Ontario Power Generation (OPG) a $2.2 billion contract to build a new gas peaker plant in Napanee. This plant is a hugely expensive and climate wrecking way to deal with short periods of peak electricity demand.

Programs that provide incentives to reduce or shift electricity use during peak periods can cost 60-90% less than power from this polluting peaker plant.

We need a full value-for-money audit of the IESO’s decision to award this contract, including an examination of lower cost and lower emission alternatives.

Send a message to the Auditor General of Ontario, Energy and Electrification Minister Stephen Lecce, Opposition Leaders Marit Stiles, Bonnie Crombie and Mike Schreiner, and your MPP asking for a value-for-money audit of the Napanee Gas Plant contract.
