Ottawa Chapter holds first Meeting

A group of interested grandparents met on Tuesday at First United Church Ottawa to discuss the possibility of creating a chapter of For Our Grandchildren in Ottawa.

To introduce 4RG we presented this video taken at several events that 4RG has previously previously arranged. Because Guy failed to connect the sound correctly everyone listened very carefully. We all presented a bit about ourselves, our reason for being here, our experience as environmentalists and activists, and our qualifications as grandparents. It’s quite a group.

Interest in proceeding was high and there was general agreement with the idea that from a base in Ottawa we would be able to take on the challenge of talking to senators and MPs to let them know that grandparents care, that grandparents vote, and that grandparents will continue to pressure for effective action so that society can redress the harm that we have already done to the world.

For a proposed action Guy suggested to set a national target of 3 percent reduction per year for the next 33 years which would result in zero emissions by 2050, a target quite consistent with the targets agreed to last year in Paris. Key to this being effective would be a requirement to report on progress annually.

One policy mechanism suggested to achieve this was to follow the advice that Stefan Dion gave in the video, namely to phase out fossil fuel subsidies, and to implement a significant price on carbon that would result in achieving the above targets. Of course other policies are also needed. Both these items will be discussed at the next meeting.

Several people volunteered to take on leadership roles. First up was to set up a Facebook page and an email system for the local group and to begin study of the senators who would be most open to the idea of proposing action.

A subsequent meeting will be held on Tuesday, May 30 at 7:00 in the same location.
