On February 21 a contingent of Peterborough supporters from PACA and 4RG made the trek to Ottawa to support John O’Brien’s Green Gramps on the Hill vigil on Parliament Hill. We were joined by Janet McCue and her sister who drummed and sang in support. We had prepared for support from Ottawa climate activists but were disappointed. Only Rolly Montpellier from Below 2 degrees, as well as my children and grandchildren joined us.
This small but mighty and cold group gathered around the centennial flame and spoke about Canada’s moral obligation to pressure the government to not approve the Teck Frontier Mine, a gigantic operation that will still be operating and pumping out the world’s dirtiest fossil fuel until 2060. We know, and the government knows, that we must stop building new fossil fuel infrastructure now.
As we were wrapping up Mr. Trudeau blasted by with a phalanx of security on his way to the House of Commons but paid no attention to us at all.
Before we got a chance to post this story, the Teck Frontier company withdrew its application, so the government was spared from having to make a decision. It is just possible to think that political pressure from citizens was part of the reason they decided against going ahead. Their letter hints at that but we will never know.
Here is the video that John O’Brien made documenting the day’s action.
Here is a collection of some of the photos we took at the event.
