Last night, Climate Action Plan 2.0 was adopted by council.
At the council meeting where this was being debated, students from YLS made excellent delegations including showing their short film and pleading for action for their future. Three members of 4RG also made delegations: Caroline Tennent, Mark Bullock, and Guy Hanchet. Council specifically thanked Mark for his faithful attendance at council meetings. It’s hard to know if our actions helped, but the mayor did remark that his voice mail was filled with messages requesting support for CCAP 2.0.
This has been a long time coming. Al Slavin, Guy Hanchet, and Cam Douglas were on the Community Working Group – starting about 15 months ago. Last summer in our strategic planning session, 4RG set getting Peterborough’s Climate Change Action Plan 2.0 passed as our top priority for 2025. In support of this we helped organize the Seniors Day of Action in October. We organized a 4RG Meets webinar. We sent Letters to the Editor, organized a Phone Zap to flood councillors inboxes, lobbied individual councillors and made presentations to council. You can see most of what 4RG did here.
Here’s the coverage from the Peterborough Examiner.
We now have something concrete to rally behind. The next steps will be to support the specific actions that will come forward for the plan. The challenge will be that many of them involve the city spending some of their money.
Onwards!!
Great job everyone. Thanks for all your hard work.
