4RG’s booth at Millenium Park on Canada Day was a great success, with all the 100 Climate Change Action Plan 2.0 sheets handed out and about 300 of the Crazy Weather flyers.
The crowd started pouring through by 12:00 when the parade ended, with probably 50 people per minute going past the booth. In contrast, between 5 and 6 PM there were only about 2 people per minute going by.
With the heavy crowds we found it useful to have one person on each side of the track to hand out pamphlets. Only about 1 in 10 who were offered pamphlets refused them, and almost all families with kids accepted them. Many people stopped for extended conversations about what we do and how they can help.
From our initial discussions with booth staffers, good opening lines as we offered a pamphlet were “You’ve got kids; you must be concerned about the climate.”
And the 1-2 punch of “Here’s the problems climate change is already causing” (Crazy Weather pamphlet) followed by “And here is what Peterborough is doing about it” (Sheet on CCAP 2.0). was an effective way to start a conversation.
