As we have said a number of times, developed countries must do justice to the people of Africa. One Canadian who stands out for his inspiring work in Africa is Stephen Lewis. He has brought compassion and hope to Africans hit by the HIV/AIDS pandemic. The Stephen Lewis Foundation helps community-level organizations that are turning the tide of HIV/AIDS in Africa, supporting grassroots groups that are the lifeline for their communities. Stephen has mobilized support of African Grandmothers amongst Grandmothers in Canada.
In his words:
“Against all odds the grandmothers campaign has become a social movement. The Canadian Grandmothers have not only raised awareness and huge sums of money (twelve million dollars in 5 years), but they have become a force for progressive advocacy at crucial political moments. . . . The grandmothers’ movement has helped to transform international policy.”

“Half of the climate pollution in the atmosphere has been put there during the working life of today’s grandparents, for our pleasure, convenience, and greed. The price will be paid by our grandchildren and those who follow them. We owe it to them to stop the destruction of the natural world on which their lives depend. There is no greater emergency. There is still a little time.”
